Literature Text

Allele wakes in a place she knows too well

The confines of her old prison cell

It is far more vast than before

The bars studded with thorns - underneath, a grassy floor.

Darkness envelops all - still she makes out

Distant snarling creatures who without a doubt

Are all that remains off her former friends

Born from the betrayal they felt at their ends.

Salem for once almost feels sympathy

The creatures around him are similar to he

They do not attack him but instead urge him on

Pleading and begging for their own release

He is tempted to turn away

But remembers the pain of his own death replayed

He turns back - leading them into the fray.

Sisiri stays apart from the crowd

Cursing his lack of speed as he goes

He'll find the bug first and take revenge

This time he will be the hero

You think if you kill that you can be good?

There can be no peace or acceptance if you would.

The incubus ignores the voice, though feeling less sure

He doesn't notice that he strides past a door.

Allele is ready to accept her end

To let the monsters tear and rend

She sees before her that she was horribly wrong

There is no god-given paradise for those who pass on

"I wish I could be forgiven...I know I should be gone."

Ready to give up so soon?

Remember for every prison room

You can find or make a key

Forge your regrets to set yourself free

Salem like his comrade heard the voice

He too ignores it - he has no other choice.

Peace is gained by cutting betrayers down

What is dealt must come back around.

His prey is now close in his sight

He gives the order -the monsters surge, eager to fight.

Allele is struck by the first beast's claws

She is tempted to lash out without any pause

She steels herself and prays she is right

For there is no other way to win this fight.

With gentle hands she takes hold of the beast

Looks in its eyes and accepts her mistake

It struggles, she bleeds, but it too understands -

Forming a tiny part of a key in her hands.

Salem at first isn't worried at all

Then realizes his forces are beginning to fall

He curses and abandons the ones who remain

He should have known better than to rely on others' pain

He and he alone will win this game.

Sisiri takes his true form and floats toward Allele

Who now holds most of a rose-shaped key.

Covered with small wounds that unlike her leg did not heal

From behind a long tail tries to choke her to death

But instead its owner now no longer draws breath

What is dealt comes back around

Salem hangs by vines off of the ground.

Allele is stricken by Sisiri's true shape

She can barely move; she cannot escape

The demon hesitates as he considers the hybrid

She whispers, understanding, but also making a plan

"You can kill me. I wouldn't blame you if you did."

Timid and harsh personas war in his mind

He lunges with a hopeless, maddened cry

He tears at Allele - but she grasps at his heart

Hesitates for a second before pulling it apart.

Sisiri claws at his mask in his dying throes

What he could not remove - acceptance he'll now never know.

The hyrbird has the last part of her thorn-covered rose.

Allele bloodied and wearied stands with her now-finished key

Facing the door to freedom, never feeling less free

I'm sorry

She turns it in the lock

I'm sorry the one who escaped was me.
