You first looked at the new dog incredulously, then sighed inwardly. Small as he was, he was still another threat. Damn these dogs! He wasn't trying to invade, he just needed to eat. If only he could make them understand.

His answer was to try and take another reluctant bite of the corpse, before making a face and spitting it out. Even as aching as his hunger was, both morality and a gag reflex prevented him from partaking. Why had he come? This was a bad idea.

Then again, he was hungry. He wasn't thinking straight. He shouldn't have growled at the female, but too late to take it back now.

The basenji's gaze darted back and forth between the two dogs, weighing up the risks. The female was strong, and his state he could neither outrun her nor best her in a fight. The small one...perhaps it was possible to use him as a hostage, in exchange for food.

Despite his realization of not five seconds ago that he wasn't thinking straight, the basenji  snapped at the pekingnese mix, front paws going out to pin the small dog down.
You no, stop, what are you doing, you are a complete idiot.
